a computer works like a file cabinet. all files are in organized folders. shortcuts
on the desktop and start menu, just link back to the source in a folder. just like
a website. to test this. goto desktop,. right click out in the open, new folder
name it test folder. click into it right click in the white. new then text document.
open text document. type something in there. click file then save. rename the
text document to (test1.txt). right click on test1.txt, click sendto desktop create
shortcut. now goto desktop and click the short cut. it will launch the text docu-
ment. now rename the folder to bad link. launch the text document from the
desktop, the shortcut. it cant find it, so it search's for the file structure. it will
find it. then it updates the shortcut..
(file extensions) are just a way so the registry can open that file with a program
you want. you can even make your own. to test this first open windows explorer.
start - run explorer click tools at the top, then folder options. click the view tab
uncheck hide file extentions. click ok. now close that down. goto desktop right
click out in the open, new text document. a file will be on the desktop new text
document.txt, open it up type something in notepad. click file and save. now
right click on the new text document.txt click rename. rename it to mytext.myfile
now click on it. a box will open, open with. find notepad in there and click on it,
click ok. now goto the desktop and click on the file mytext.myfile or whatever
you named the file name and extension too..
(copy and pasting). this is a very helpful thing to know how to do. for instance
making webpages. or copying down cheat codes for a game to store. anything.
try it out. put your mouse curser right in front of copy on this paragraph. click the
left mouse button and hold it. drag all the way to later.. now you should see it a
different color. thats called highlighted, right click on it and click copy. now goto
desktop click start run type notepad. right click on notepad click paste. now the
paragraph copyed to notepad. now you can save it. and use it later.
(what is a megabyte and a gigabyte). ok a byte of information is one letter in a
document. take out notepad type 1 letter in it then save it, right click on it and
see properties its 1 byte. a kilobyte *kb* is 1 thousand bytes. a megabyte *mb*
is 1 million bytes.. a gigabyte *gb* is 1 billion bytes of information. 1 billion
letters. (damn thats alot of biting, reminds me of mike tyson) hehe well anyways.
this is not exact.. there is *file structure* that take up more space on the drive.
but it gives you a general idea. 1 byte is 8 bits of binary ..
(organizing the start menu) and adding different programs manually first making
shortcuts for the startmenu or the desktop in that manner. this is starting where
the first paragraph left off. ok making shortcuts. click start run type explorer.
windows explorer. click the + next to mycomputer then click + next to local disk
c:/ .. find the windows folder. scroll down the windows folder till you find calc.exe
or just calc with the calc icon.. right click on it click sendto desktop create short-
cut. now its on the desktop. rename it to calculator on the desktop.. ok now
organizing the start menu. click start goto settings. taskbar and start menu. click
the advanced tab. now click the advanced button.. (you can also) click clear to
clear your recently viewed documents.. (porn) hehe. ok anyways this is the start
menu. its different on xp. you can add things in here on xp but it is not everything.
well anyways right click on the calculator icon on desktop click copy. right click
in there click paste the icon will show up in there... now close everything down
and click start you will see calculator. now in the (programs folder) in there you
can make new folder's, and drag shortcuts where you want them.. like make a
folder games. drag all your games to there. drag whole folders to games folder.
thats how you organize it.
(downloading files) and how to find them. ok remember the harddrive is like a
file cabinet. everything is organized in folders. when you download something
you have to pick the directory to put it in. so you can find it. ok click here this is
my picture in a zip file. click it and a box will come open.. file download.. it will
have run program from location.. and save to disk. click save to disk. click ok.
now this is your hard drive the big file cabinet dont let it scare you. see the arrow
button on the top click it. you see it has a: and c: d:. a is floppy drive.. you can
download straight to a floppy drive. but im going to show you the c:/ drive.. ok
click arrow click local disk ( c:/ ) click the windows folder. now find the desktop
folder in there.. this is c:/windows/desktop it also has a shortcut for this location
in there.. but i wanted to show you even your desktop is a folder. ok click the
folder button that has a sparkle on it. right next to the arrow you clicked, new
folder.. rename it to dans picture.. now click into that folder and click save. now
goto your desktop you will see the folder dans picture.. click into it and my file
will be in there.. picture.zip..
(using a search engine) to use a search engine to your advantage. is to limit the
results. it is fairly easy to do. see that google search at the top of my page here.
select ( oweb ). ok most people when they search. do not know how to use a
search engine proper. they search like this. ( dell soundcard drivers ) what that
does is just shows any page that has any of the words in it. maybe a whole page
will just have the word dell, another just soundcard etc etc. thats because they
did not limit their results. here is an example, of how to limit the results that the
search engine produces. ( +dell +"sound card" +drivers -microsoft.com ) as you
can see. theres a + in front of dell. that means the page has to have dell in it
then you see +"sound card" that means it has to have the phrase sound card in
it as well. then plus drivers. so the page has to have the words dell, "sound card"
and drivers in it. -microsoft.com that means the site can not have microsoft.com
in the results. you could also do -"video card" etc.
