how to setup a network
a network is simply 2 or more computers, linked together so you can share
files, printer, to play multiplayer lan games, or to access internet. thats how
the internet works. the internet is a network of networks. all linked together
in a big tity spanking orgy.
ok to set up a two pc simple network. for just home use, all you need is a
ethernet card on both pcs. and a crossover patch cable. thats it. you insert
the cards in both pcs install them. and plug in the crossover cord. then goto
network neihborhood and select add a ( network place ). or setup home or
small business network. and choose the settings you want. and make a
setup floppy to put on all other pcs. then you have a network. now you need
to put servers and clients to connect the pcs. for exsample to share internet
connection. you will need a proxy server on the hostsystem with the internet
connection. and then on the other systems you will need to make your host
computers ip address, the proxy address in internet settings in the control
panel. so any servers will work. like a http server. or a ftp server to comm-
unicate with the pcs. you can find these servers, free all over the internet.
just do a search for free networking tools. or free proxyserver. here is a free
proxy server from analogx. this will enable internet sharing thru your whole
network. remember to unblock your firewall to allow a network to setup. and
allow icmp echo request in local lan firewall settings.
to hook more then one pc together and to make a real network you need a
hub a 5 port hub is around 20 dollars. you can go higher with a gigabit hub
but then you need gigabit cards and faster wire. ekk you talking more mullah.
just a regular 10/100mbs a sec is fine. for home network you looking at $20
for the hub, $15 for 250 foot cat5e cable, $15 for rj-45 plugs and a crimper
to put the plugs onto the cable. and thats it. hard part is running cable thru
your house =)hopefully you do this as you build your house. but you can run it
under basement or take down wall paneling. then you just put the hub where
all the cables will go. need a cable and a ethernet 10/100 card for each
computer. and run it to your hub.
to share broudband connection with other pcs, network devices, or game
consoles without having to connect to a main computer. like with the proxy
server bit. you will need to get a router. think of a router as a internet splitter.
but it is also a hub. so your computers will be networked. if you want them to
be. but if you dont then just keep them blocked by the software firewall on
your pcs. the router usually has a firewall built in.. so it will reject connections
even before your pc's know about it. external firewall is 10x better then just
a software one. just because of that reason.
to set up a wireless network.. all you need is a wireless hub. or a wireless
router. it basically works the same but with out cable. you need a wireless
router to hook your dsl or cable modem into it.. then for the pcs get wireless
cards. newer laptops come with wireless capabilities meaning theres a wire-
less card in it. togo farther away you need to get a antenna for the computer.
there are different kinds of antennas. some can shoot really far they are call-
ed a antennacannon. basically used for wardriving. jacking into wifi and there
are small ones just to boostsignal.depends what you need. if your boy wants
to connect in his tree house on a lap top really far you need the cannon. but
down stairs a simple 10-15 dollar one will do
you can run a network thru your 110 power wiring. i wouldn't do it. but what-
ever floats your boat. basicly an adaptor plugs into your wiring.. being used
as wiring. without electric running in on system. but it sounds stupid. heh
I have never tryed it.
with any network signal. it looses integrity over long distances. you will need
a repeater. also known as a active hub. what a repeater does is take the
signal and recreate it. so it can travel farther without screwing up. this is how
they run highspeed internet to people from the server. the farther away you
are from the server the slower the connection..
how to setup and secure a wireless router
if you dont secure a wireless router, you are putting yourself in danger. be it
someone having access to your network, or using your connection and ip
address to hack into a goverment or corporation server. and it looks like its
coming from you. most of the time its just to get free highspeed internet. but
still thats taking from your power. let them sob buy there own.
first login to router. open up IE start, run IEXPLORE. type http://192.168.1.1
it will prompt for login and password. default login name is admin and pass-
word is admin. if you forgot your ( admin or password ) you will have to do a
hard reset. just unplug router, and hold down on the reset button for a minute
or two. and the password should be reset and everything set to default.
first where it says ip address once you login. go in there and change the last
three numbers to anything else for exsample 192.168.1.250. you will need to
remember that to log into your router again... but someone else wont know
what it is... then click administration and change your password make the
password a combination of numbers and letters.. like for instance passw0rd
or password123. thats to avoid a password cracker.
next find where it says remote management. and check disabled. now noone
will be able to connect to your router from the outside, and change settings on
you. to allow another pc onto your network etc. where it says network name
(ssid) change it to something besides default so noone will be able to guess
what brand and model router you have to exploit you. if theres a possible ex-
ploit. where it says ssid broudcast click disabled. that makes your network
name invisible to people trying to search you.
click the (security tab). find something that looks like spi firewall protection,
click (enabled). this will keep people from accessing your network besides
the computers you want to access it. now click the wireless tab. click wireless
mac filter check ( enabled ). every wireless card is given a ( mac address )
(media access control). where it says access restriction, click permit. now
click ( mac address filter list ). click wireless client list. and add all your mac
address's on all your pcs connecting to this wireless router. and save it. WPA
and WPA2 is for encryption security. if your wireless cards support this then
use it. make sure first. click ( encryption ) click aes standard 256-bit encrypt-
ion then for pass phrase goto this site grc.com/passwords.htm. and where
it says key renewal put 600, so the encryption key will renew every 10 minutes.
how to make patch cables
in order to make a patch cable.. you will need rj-45 crimpers, rj-45 plug conn-
ectors, rj-45 boots, superglue, and a spool of rj-45 cat5e cable. you can get all
this from the website ( cyberguys.com ) and you can also get a ethernet cable
tester for $25 dollars or so. those are good if you run lines really far away. too
another room or another floor of the complex.
here is a ( complete kit ) from cyberguys. it has everything you will need to get
started or you can buy the stuff individually
well all you do, is cut about half an inch of the tubing off each end of the cat5e
cable. without slicing into any of the 8 wires just the protective outer part. then
untwist all the wires and bend them until they are all straight. do not strip the
wires, make sure they are perfectly cut off and even in lenth. and align them in
the order of the following diagram.
make sure you put the protective boots on, before you crimp the second end
of the line put them on so they will be in the right direction. youll see if you have
the kit in front of you how they go on. test the cable first. make sure it works
if it does, then make sure the protective boots goes on all the way. then pull
them back out, and put a dab of super glue on both sides and put it back on
wipe off any access super glue.
just make as many cables as you need, to wire each computer to your hub. if its
far distances to the hub you might want to run a wire through the walls and put a
ethernet jack on each end.
ok if your wanting to link only 2 computers together without a hub you will need
a crossover. you make it the same way as a patch cable just the wiring is a tad
different. follow this diagram to make a crossover. you can also buy a cross-
over adaptor. and a standard patch cable if your unsure.
