linux introduction

linux is an operating system thats derived from unix. unix is very similar to ms dos. so
basically dos is to windows 98 & me, as unix is to linux. linux is not as user friendly as
windows. so it would be kinda difficult to use for pc beginners. like for instance to
setup windows you use control panel and click to set things. linux is all command line
driven. but programmers is beginning to make things more user friendly for linux now.
the main differnces between linux and windows are. for one linux dont have that pesky
registry like windows has. which makes it alot harder to install programs but say good
bye to 99.9% virus's out there, say good bye to 100% spyware. registry is what makes
windows easy to use and what makes it less secure. the drives are different. msdos
and windows is c: when unix/linux is root: linux is also open source. what that means
is the whole operating system can be modifiyed and recompiled. because you have
access to the coding of the operating system. and on windows you dont.

that is why servers run linux mostly instead of windows. one downfall is linux does not
have compatibility on games designed only for windows.. u may ask why are they only
made for windows. good question but you allready know the answer. hence linux is
a freeware operating system, windows is big $$$ bucks. money makes the world go
around. ( so i dont get sued ) i cant say they do but (my personal opinion): is microsoft
pays gamecompanys kickbacks to make the games only to work on windows. if every
one switched to linux microsoft would fold in under. so therefore most video games is
not compatibile with linux i know that sucks dont it.

ok enough of the bs about what is linux. now its time for me to tell you how to get linux
yourself to try out or to use permently. if your a gamer it will be hard for you to only use
linux unless you like to play the penguin soltaire. lol what is penguin soltaire? its a
linux version of windows soltaire. but like i said there are thousands of distros of linux
out there. im just going to link you to one to try out yourself.

some distos comes with a shell called (xwindows ). if it has xwindows you will have the
feel of windows when using it. i highly recemend getting one with it. so im just going to
go ahead and link you to one with xwindows. to try out. you have five choices of using
linux, you can either burn iso images to cd rom. and just boot from cd which is called
a live cd. or format the harddrive to ext3 format and instal the iso toit. you can dual boot
windows and linux which means you have to ( partican ) the harddrive. and run a boot
loader to choose from windows and linux on boot. you can install it to a usb pen drive.
and boot from usb or you can run from a virtual machine. for a virtual machine you will
need to get something like vmware

im going to have you make a boot cd with a linux distro on it. after you make it you pop
it in cdrom and choose boot with cdrom drive instead of harddrive and your linux os will
load and you will see what it is. then when you take cd out and reboot you will return to
windows nothing harmed. nothing to loose but after this walk thru, i am going to show
you how to acctually install it to your hard drive in case you want to run it permently.

test drive linux

ok first your going to need a cd burner. and burner software that has the option to
burn image to cd. nero has that option, it is a pretty common thing. a image is
a cloned copy of a hard drive and format system inside one file ( file.iso ) that is
how linux is distributed in .iso files. ok your going to need to download a distro-
bution of linux i am going to have you try slax. because for its size of download its
a pretty kick ass distro. and it has xwindows. so download slax standard edition .

its ( 198mb ) so if your on dial up going to need to download it overnight. but any-
ways just download the iso file. put a blank disk in cd -- copier find the option burn
image to disk. select the iso file you downloaded. create the cd and boom your
done. now pop cd in drive, and reboot computer it should ask if you want to boot
from cd or it will automaticly boot from cd. if not you will have to go into bios and
probbly turn cd rom to boot before harddrive. the instructions for this is on one of
my basics pages. well anyways it will take awhile for linux to boot into os because
the fact it detects all your hardware everytime you use the cd. if you had it on hard-
drive it would detect hardware once and save it in a log file to hard drive. so you
would not go thru that bs again. but using it in this form you will have to let it scan
for devices every single time.. drats i know. not to mention you cant install any-
thing either booting from a cd. and if you want to spend the little extra time
downloading the kill bill version so you can run ( windows applications ) on linux.
without installing wine.

ok after it boots up it will ask for user name and password, the default user is root
and password is toor. if you intstall it to hard drive you will want to change that of
cource. ok then it will say your connected to root etc. type startx to load xwindows
so type startx. if your familer with dos and older versions of windows. startx is linux
version of typing win to load windows. and now your in linux with xwindows. click
around and play with things. you will see its very simular and in alot of ways better
then windows. like the 4 desktops you can have 20 applications open in one desk-
top and switch over to a clean one then switch back to your work. so in many ways
its alot better then windows. but it will take awhile getting used to this and like i said
its alot harder to setup. things you took for granted on winblows. your in for a
whole new ballgame.

install linux

ok you can choose to either just install linux by itself. which is a hell alot easyer or you
can make a dual boot. i am just going to walk you thru the dual boot setup process. so
you can have both windows xp and linux on your computer. then you will know how to do
the easyer way too. just knocks off alot of steps.

look how much ram you got, ( hold alt ) and double click ( my computer ) on desktop.
and it will give you your ram size. now you have to determin what size you want the part-
itions to be. also if your harddrive is under 30gb i do not recemend a dual boot xp.

::::::::::step one::::::::::

back up any important documents, emails, drivers, family photos.. etc etc. if you dont you will loose all your files. and you will cry

::::::::::step two::::::::::

get a windows xp installation cd & download a linux distro. like redhat, mandrake, ubuntu, suse etc

::::::::::step three::::::::::

burn the iso to a cd of the linux distro. lets use ubuntu. open up your cd burner software. and find something like burn image to disk. or something simular.

::::::::::step four::::::::::

pop in the windows xp installation cd and reboot. if it does not boot from cdrom, you will need to go into bios. tap del or f2 button on boot and that takes you into bios.. and change boot sequence to ( A: cd-rom c: ) make sure cdrom is before your harddrive.

::::::::::step five::::::::::

use windows xp fdisk utility to partican your harddrive. lets say its a 40 gb harddrive. enter the following values.

15 gb for windows xp (NTFS)
16 gb for a common drive to share files (FAT32)
and leave the rest 9 gb unpartitoned for linux

::::::::::step six::::::::::

make sure your windows xp is the primary partican. and select accept and save partican.

::::::::::step seven::::::::::

install windows xp. then remove windows xp cd from drive. and insert your linux os cd and reboot computer.

::::::::::step eight::::::::::

when it gets to the partican software of the linux distro. enter these values

50 mb for boot partition
2x your ram for linux swap/paging file ( 512mb ram -> 1024 )
and the rest of space set to ext3 for linux os and save the values

::::::::::step nine::::::::::

install linux when it asks what boot loader to use select grub. and install it to mbr(Master Boot record) that will make linux boot instead of XP. next time computer boots.

::::::::::step ten::::::::::

finish the installation and create another user to use instead of root if you can. that will help keep the computer more secure. plus keep you from deleteing things you was not supposed to.

::::::::::step eleven::::::::::

now remove all the cds and reboot. grub bootloader should load. select linux from the list. and log into your root username so you can change settings.

::::::::::step twelve::::::::::

find the program command shell or command line. something to that effect and run it

::::::::::step thirteen::::::::::

navigate till you find the folder and file ( /etc/grub.conf ) and open the file. if you dont know how type help in the commmand shell for a list of commands.

::::::::::step fourteen::::::::::

scroll down to the very bottom of grub.conf file and add the following lines under all the text. where it says [TAB] that tells you where to put a tab indent. by pressing the tab button on your keyboard once.

title Windows XP
[TAB]root (hd0,0)
[TAB]makeactive
[TAB]chainloader +1

ok it should be dual booting now. if you use a different bootloader. search up how to set it up. when you reboot your computer it should load grub with linux and windows xp on the list.. just simply select windows xp to load winblows.

if you want to just install linux. skip about 99.9% of the steps and just pop the ubuntu
cd in drive and install and your done =) or create two partitions ext3 and swap. then
install the iso. well i hope you enjoy linux. and check for new versions of your favorite
distros they add alot of new programs on it and make it more pretty gui ( graphical
user interface ) and make it more user friendly. but yes enjoy linux and please dis-
tribute amoung friends and family. if they dont game they dont need winblows. in
fact they will run longer and more secure no virus no spyware!! what more you want?

and also when you first boot up your computer, look to see if it says something like
press esc to load boot menu. if it has that option. you can also just throw in a sec-
ond harddrive intall linux on it. and press esc if you want to boot into linux. that is the
most simplest way to make a dualboot.. or just stop living your whole life on your pc.
go out more often maybe get a hobby like bowling or masterbation. one of the
two.. maybe masterbate while bowling.. hey its been done i am sure go check
youtube. well anyways go get a life

here is something a freind of mine submited too me. i have not tryed it yet but from
what i read its for windows users to try out ubuntu, without formating without running
from live cd it downloads the linux shell and you run in the win32 envirment. it runs
like any other windows application i mean this is cool for people to try out linux. but
you still got windows running in the background so its kinda useless. but hey try it
out wubi. submitted by: SANEBOI ( not recemended for dial up users ) unless you
run it for like 4 days to download the ubuntu.. o_O not sure if it has resume.
